INSTITUTO MÉDICO LÁSER TREATMENT PROTOCOL

1. On the first visit the patient is assessed by a dermatologist who compiles the clinical history and performs the physical examination. The characteristics of the hair, skin and area to be treated are determined to choose the most appropriate laser and consider the final outcome.

2. Before starting the treatment recommendations are offered regarding sun, UV rays, hair removal of the area in between sessions, sunscreen lotions, etc.

3. Photographs are taken and the area to be treated is marked.

4. In some cases shaving of the area is required before applying the laser (not in facial treatments).

5. During the treatment both the medical personnel and the patient must wear eye protection.

6. At the beginning of the treatment the interval between sessions is approximately six weeks for facial treatments and two-three months for body treatments. In the following sessions the doctor will determine the time between sessions.

7. Treatments are supervised by a dermatologist at all times, who will decide the most appropriate type of laser for each particular patient.

8. To obtain optimal results different lasers can be used in each session.

9. Several areas can be treated in one session.

10. The duration of the sessions can range from 10 minutes (upper lip) to several hours for wider areas (legs, back…).

11. Sometimes the doctor may recommend the application of a topical anaesthetic for areas with high follicle density.

12. The number of sessions necessary depends on several factors such as hair and skin colour and the area to be treated. IML offers the possibility of completing all sessions until all hair is eliminated. This treatment is especially indicated for body areas.

13. For facial hair, 10-session programmes are recommended, enabling the removal of darker and thicker hair. Given that hair in the facial area might regenerate after the treatment, additional sessions are recommended.

14. Because facial hair removal is more difficult to perform, it is best to use intense pulsed light.

15. Hair removal in males is difficult and consequently requires a more specific protocol:

sessions every three months in the first year
every four months in the second year
every six months in the third year
once a year after the fourth year
