SUBSTANCES THAT DELAY HAIR GROWTH

Eflornithine cream (Vaniqa) is the only substance that is really effective in delaying hair growth and can be prescribed only by a doctor. It decreases the frequency of hair removal but is not a depilatory cream, meaning it is applied by the patient after his/her usual hair removal method. It is indicated for facial hirsutism. It must be applied to a cleansed face twice a day and it is suitable for all skin types. Although it does not contain perfume 2% of women present irritation and must stop using it. Vaniqa is truly innovative in the treatment of hirsutism and hypertrichosis. It is capable of decreasing the mitotic index of germinative cells in the hair bulb, leading to the progressive reduction of the hair shaft and the hair growth index in treated areas.
Eflornithine is an irreversible inhibitor of the ODC enzyme (ornithine decarboxylase) which catalyzes the conversion of ornithine into putrescine. The production of putrescine and other polyamines-such as spermidine and spermine- is mandatory for cell proliferation, differentiation and synthetic function. Its efficacy has been proven through an extensive program of clinical trials that includes 1,800 patients. Studies show that this method can be used in combination with general antiandrogenic treatment with excellent results in patients with hormonal hirsutism and in photoepilation. It is also the best treatment for the reduction of grey hair since in these cases photoepilation does not work. Eflornithine cream at a 11.5% concentration gradually makes hair and hair follicles smaller, achieving a significant clearance of hair 24 weeks after treatment in approximately 70% of patients treated for facial hirsutism.
