IDOPATHIC HIRSUTISM

It is caused by increased skin sensibility due to androgen activity or to increased activity at skin level of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase as a result of a familial tendency to have a larger number of hair follicles per unit of skin area. It starts at puberty with normal periods, normal circulating hormones and normal fertility. There is a familial past history with absence of anomalies at exploration, with normal hormone measurements and normal ultrasound results. It is usually diagnosed after other causes of hyperandrogenism have been ruled out.
